Just arrived in Iceland…

I have just arrived in Iceland.  We arrived at 6:45am local time,  after a 5 hour flight from Boston.  We arrive in pitch darkness.  Our transfer to the Grand Hotel in Rekjavik left the airport at approximately 730 and the sky was just starting to lighten to the east.  There is no snow and the temperature when we arrived was -4C. This destination is a mystery to many, so this trip will be an exploration in progress……

Tulip Time River Cruise – Highly Recommended

Tulip Time River Cruise – Highly Recommended

If someone says Holland, what comes to mind?  Windmills and tulips?  That is exactly what I expected to see on a Tulip Time River Cruise.  What I saw were those and a lot more.  This was a leisurely paced tour on the waterways of The Netherlands and Belgium.  My favorite city, really a small medieval town, was Bruges Belgium.  This was an optional tour from Ghent.  The Delta Works project, built to keep the sea from flooding the Zeeland a...

Copper Canyon Tour – Highly Recommended

The Copper Canyon railroad is considered one of the top scenic rail journeys in the world.  The tour with Caravan Tours gives guests a roundtrip ride through the canyon to one of the most beautiful vistas of the canyon.  You will enjoy this view from your hotel room that is perched on the edge of the canyon.  While at the Mirador hotel, you will visit the Tarahumara Indians who make their homes in the canyon below the hotel.  On the way from...

Christmas Markets Cruise – Highly Recommended

It’s never too early to start planning a cruise to the wonderful Christmas markets of Germany, Czech Republic and Austria.  The cruise I took with Avalon River Cruises began in Prague and included a tour of the Charles Bridge, the castle and the old town.  Leaving Prague we took a motorcoach through the Czech countryside to the city of Nuremberg.  Here we boarded our home for the next week.  The ship only has cabins on the outside so e...

Ocean Coral and Turquesa (Additional Info) – Highly Recommended

Ocean Coral and Turquesa was previously reviewed here.  But have some additional information that we wanted to pass along. Open air lobby. 4 pools, one is quiet and rather private. 24 hour room service has a $2 delivery charge. All the rooms are oceanview, but if on the first floor it is really a garden view. No reservations for dinner and if busy will be given a beeper. There is no limit on a la carte dinners. 24 hour sports bar. This resort i...

Secrets Maroma – Highly Recommended

Long dusty bumpy road to the entrance of Secrets Maroma. Beautiful air conditioned lobby with private check in desks. This property is so new the landscaping is pretty sparse. Rooms are all the same size and are jr suites. Lunch and breakfast can be a la carte or buffet in the same restaurant. No reservations are needed for dinner and if there is a wait, you will be given a beeper. Poolside buffet available each day. American beer is available. ...

Iberostar Grand – Highly Recommended

Iberostar Grand – Highly Recommended

Iberostar Grand is next door to the other Iberostar properties but cannot be accessed from them. The main building looks like a mix of several Vegas resorts. There are a lot of oceanfront rooms. It seemed very stuffy and would not be the place for young adults or anyone wanting a little fun and action, although they could go to the other resorts. This would be for upscale older couples who want more of the 4 Seasons experience. Beth

Ocean Coral and Turquesa – Highly Recommended

We really liked the Ocean Coral. All the rooms run parallel to the ocean, which is very unusual in the Mayan. The rooms had ocean views and you could even hear the waves. We liked the fact that everywhere you went you could see the water. The privilege section, I thought is worth the money. You have a separate large pool, roped off beach with drink service. there is also a private pool restaurant etc. They also have a private lounge that serves ...
